Susan Brown Glenewinkel (1966-2024)

A loving daughter, friend, teacher, wife, Mama and Gigi

Susan Brown Glenewinkel of San Marcos Texas, aged 57, passed away unexpectedly on March 11, 2024, leaving a hole in the hearts of all who knew her and a sadness so profound there are no words for it. She was born on July 24, 1966, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Dorothy (Clausen) and Neil Brown. She grew up in a loving family with her parents and brother Kevin.

Susan graduated from Southwest Texas State, where she was very active as a Sigma Nu Little Sister.  She met many lifelong friends in San Marcos, including her very best friend, her future husband, Reagan Glenewinkel.  She and Reagan married in 1992 and moved to Round Rock, Texas, where Susan focused on her number one dream job of being a mother.  They also spent time in El Paso, Seguin and San Marcos as they moved with Reagan's job with UPS.  No matter where they were, Susan always created a home filled with love and the many friends she met along the way. Reagan and Susan's 32-year marriage exuded a special magic and devotion that has served as a model for their children and those that know them.

When all of her children were school-aged, Susan earned her teaching certificate and put it to use serving students in various districts across Texas. She was a dedicated and passionate teacher whose commitment and passion touched the lives of countless students. Most recently, Susan was the Response to Intervention (RTI) teacher at Bluebonnet Elementary in Lockhart.  She taught in Lockhart ISD for 10 years, continually inspiring her students and spurring them on to a love for learning. She also dedicated time as a mentor and a friend to her colleagues, always at the ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. Susan's fun-loving and caring spirit made her the perfect teacher.

Susan was a devoted and caring wife, Mama and Gigi who always put her family first. Nothing made Susan happier than spending time with those she called her own. Susan was the proud mother of six children – five by birth and one by choice.  She was also an amazing Gigi to thirteen grandchildren who brought her much joy. Susan was the heart of the family, the one everyone counted on whether it be sage advice, warm hospitality, or a listening ear.  She was always supportive and encouraging of her family's dreams and aspirations, championing them in all their life choices.

Susan was a kind and generous friend who made everyone feel welcomed and valued. She had a warm and genuine smile that lit up any room. She had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. She loved to read, sit by her pool, or wade in the river. Her greatest passion and accomplishment was by far building a life of adventure, love, and mutual support with Reagan.

Susan is already missed by her husband, Reagan; her children, Morgan Snody (wife Erin and children Blair and Reese); Trenton Snody (wife Sarah and children Charlotte, Sophia, and Nora); David Vidales (wife Kalie and children Eli, Flora, and Lyla); Cameron Glenewinkel (wife Amanda and children Lane August and Cameron); Jackson Glenewinkel (wife Bailey and children Maggie Jo and Beaux); Mary Carson Glenewinkel Mills (husband Alex and son Auggie); by her loving parents, Neil and Dottie Brown of San Antonio; her Uncle Walt; her brother Kevin Brown of Florida (wife Jennifer and children, Adam and Josh); by her brothers- and sisters-in-law who counted her as a true sister; by many nieces and nephews; by a very large circle of friends from every stage of her life, and by her colleagues and students. Last but not least, even her beloved dogs, Gypsy and Huckleberry, feel her absence greatly.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her aunt, Betty Graham.

Susan created a beautiful life, full of joy, love, and kindness.  Her enduring legacy will live on with her parents, brother, husband, children and grandchildren, family, and friends.  Her circle was wide and her impact on this world and the hearts of others was great.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St James Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Monsignor Dennis Darilek officiating.  Interment will follow in the Kingsbury Cemetery. Reception information will be provided at the service.

Her sons and son-in-law will serve as pallbearers for their mother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Susan Brown Glenewinkel Memorial Fund, which they are in the process of establishing to honor Susan's commitment to education.
