The Reverend Thomas N. Ward, age 84, of Seguin passed away January 29, 2011. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011, at 4 p.m. at Cross Church with the Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment private. He was born on March 17, 1926, in Denton, TX to George Alfred Ward and Avena Breitling Ward. Tom began his working life as a truck driver and worked for brief periods in an auto parts store. He served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserve from 1944 until 1956, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. For 11 years Tom worked at the Shell Oil Refinery in Deer Park, TX. In 1962, while workers were on strike at Shell, he made a decision that changed his life. He decided to go to seminary to become an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. In 1966, he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves, MO. After ordination, he served as pastor of St. Paul UCC in Schulenberg, TX from 1966-1968; St. Paul UCC, Houston, TX from 1968-1971; St. Paul UCC, New Bremen, OH 1971-1976; and Community Church UCC, San Antonio, TX from 1976-1991. After official retirement, he served as interim pastor of several small congregations including the UCC churches in Uhland and Niederwald. He also worked for several years at Slumber Falls Camp, a United Church of Christ summer camp in New Braunfels, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Doris Adele Schmeltz, and brother, George Ward. Tom had four children, Avena Corbett and husband Tom, Joseph Ward and wife Mikki, Christian Ward and wife Melissa, and Angela Ward Grayeagle and husband Grayeagle; six grandchildren, Sean and Koren Corbett, Samual Ward, Shara Ward Pierce and husband David, Brayden and Brynner Grayeagle, and three great grandchildren David, Aine, and Carson Pierce. He is survived by his second wife, Ara Clark Nelson Ward; sister, Rachel Boyles and husband Paul; step-daughter, Donna Weatherford and husband T.J.; three grandchildren, Tim Myrick and wife Danielle, Ronnie Harvey and wife Cassie, and Holly Harvey and four great grandchildren, T.J., Hunter, Rowdy, and Cashlyn.
