Obituary

Walter Alfred Ulbricht was born on the family farm north of Poth, Texas on March 2, 1922 to Bruno Oscar and Hermine Lassig Ulbricht and passed away on April 28, 2016 in Seguin, Texas. He was the first child baptized in St. John Lutheran Church in Poth, Texas in 1923. He was a member of Poth High School's first football team, the Pirates, in the 1938-39 school year and graduated as Valedictorian. He then took a business course at Draughn's Business School in San Antonio and began working at First National Bank in Poth. In August 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy, and was stationed at various Navy schools and bases across the country. In 1944 he was chosen to enter the Navy's V-12 Officer Training program and attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1945 he was injured playing football with the North Carolina Tarheels and was transferred to the Portsmouth Navy Hospital in Virginia. In May 1946 he was medically discharged from the US Navy. In 1948 he graduated from the University of Texas with a BBA degree, majoring in Banking. While at U.T. he met Bernice Elizabeth Mahlow, a beautiful registered nurse at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. They married March 13, 1948 and happily continued their life together until her death in 1993. Walter worked at banks in Poth, Kenedy, and later Castroville, where as Executive Vice President and Director, he helped open and managed the town's first bank, Castroville State Bank, from April 1959 to April 1964. He then came to Seguin State Bank and Trust in Seguin, Texas where he retired in 1988 as Senior Vice President and Director. He continued to serve the bank in public relations and as a Director until the bank was sold in 2005. He served in various civic organizations and drives and was a member of the American Legion. He has been an active member of the Seguin Rotary Club since 1964. He was a member of the Seguin ISD School Board for 9 years in the 1970's and 1980's. He was a member of the Texas Lutheran University Development Board and the President's Associates for many years during which time he and his wife established the Bernice and Walter Ulbricht Scholarship Fund. Walter was a member of Emanuel's Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities and was a faithful member of Emanuel's Heritage Bible Class. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, his brother and sister and two brothers-in-law. He is survived by his sons, Walter Jr. (Mona) and Werner (Gretchen) of Seguin and Wilbert (Patty) of Katy, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amy Ulbricht and her son Zander, Anna Ulbricht, Jenna Xenakis (Nick), and Weston Ulbricht; and step-granddaughter Melanie Donaho and her daughters Ashley and Addison. He is further survived by a sister Alice Skudrna, numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel's Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Cannon officiating. Private interment will follow at a later date at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Rather than flowers, memorials may be made to Emanuel's Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis, Seguin, Texas, 78155 or the Bernice and Walter Ulbricht Scholarship Fund at Texas Lutheran University, 1000 West Court Street, Seguin, Texas 78155 or a charity of one's Choice.
